Ian R Barker Associates is an independent professional consultancy offering ‘common sense’ advice and business risk solutions to small to medium size enterprises in the UK. Our services are affordable, confidential and highly personalised, with an aim of providing a high quality service to all its valued clients. We have have extensive experience and accomplished knowledge of ISO 9001, 14001, BS OHSAS 18001, HSG 65 resulting from the development and implementation of business risk management systems.
The company is managed by Ian, who is an experienced occupational health & safety, environmental and quality practitioner, who is concerned in maintaining a safe workplace, sound environmental performance and supporting best practices in the workplace. Over the last 20 years he has built upon his experience and knowledge to be able to offer services in Occupational Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Business Continuity Management.
Ian’s background began in shipbuilding and ship repairs, employed as a Marine Engineer at later as a Quality Assurance Engineer at Brooke Marine, constructing commercial vessels and warships for the Ministry of Defence, in accordance with the requirements of Ministry of Defence Quality Standard 05-21, AQAP-1.
Previous Duties & Responsibilities
• Engineering Supervisor at Three Quays Marine Services acting as a Supervisor of Asian engineers in the fitting of auxiliary and propulsion machinery into the Sultan of Oman’s ship, during construction in Salalah, Sultanate of Oman.
• Assurance Manager at Brooke Yachts International Ltd responsible for the development and maintenance of the QMS in accordance with the requirements of: BS 5750 Part 2: 1987.
• QHSE Manager and Project Manager respectively at Wärtsilä UK Ltd and Wärtsilä NSD Oy, Vassa, Finland, reporting directly to the Managing Director for the establishment, implementation and maintenance of a QSHE Management Systems and also involved in site management of Texaco Captain – Floating Production and Storage Off take Vessel at Dragados Offshore, Cadiz and Ferrol, Spain.
• Quality Assurance & Environment Manager at May Gurney Construction responsible for the establishment, implementation and maintenance of the QSHE Integrated Business Management Systems.
• Health, Safety, Environment & Supervisory Training Team Leader at National Construction College, Construction Industry Training Board, in charge of the planning, organisation, facilitation and deliver of cost effective SHE training to the clients.
• Assurance Manager at Serco Business Services responsible for the review and status of the Infrastructure Works Site Management systems and advising Contract Managers on all QSHE matters within their business streams and work sites for the Ministry of Defence.
• Safety, Health & Environmental Management Advisor at Heatrae Sadia Heating accountable for the safety, health & welfare of 500 employees and the environmental management at two manufacturing sites.
Continuing Professional Development
Ian is currently developing his portfolio of evidence and mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which helps create a structured career path, as well as safeguarding professional status. The objective is to gain Chartered Membership (CMIOSH) as IOSH is the only organisation in the world that offers Chartered membership to health and safety practitioners and recognises the achievement of the highest professional standards.
Clients acknowledge that when they work with a Chartered Practitioner, they’re dealing with someone who’s at the top of their profession. All our chartered members of the Institute of Safety & Health and Chartered Quality Institute must carry out Continuing Professional Development and maintain CPD records, that may be used as formal evidence of the steps taken to maintain professional competence.
Ian is also a committee member of MESH (Mid-Anglia Environment, Safety & Health Group) and an active member of the following professional bodies: IOSH (Institute of Safety & Health), CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certified Auditors). With this activity and associated responsibilities, Ian is able to add to his wide portfolio of skills.
